Recreational Classes

Assessment and Joining

To join Oxford school of Gymnastics bring your child to an assessment session on a FRIDAY evening. All children interested in joining our recreational classes need to attend one of these sessions to be added to our waiting list. THERE IS NO NEED TO BOOK. Children must be at least 4 yrs old to attend the assessment.

All assessment sessions will be on a Friday at 6.15pm.

The cost is 2 per child and this should be handed in at the start of the assessment along with your application form - which you will be given to complete on arrival.

The duration of the assessment will depend on how many children are participating in the class but it usually lasts around 30 minutes.

Children should wear either a leotard or shorts and T-shirt for assessments and jewelry including ear-rings should be removed or if newly pierced, taped up.

The Club uniform is compulsory for all our recreational gymnasts once you have been given a place in a class.

All sessions take place at Lord Williams's Lower School, Towersey Road, Thame, OX9 3NW. We are located in the main school building in the school hall.

ASSESSMENT DAYS - PLEASE NOTE THESE ARE NOT EVERY WEEK - Please check that your assessment session is on prior to leaving.

Friday 6th July at 6.15pm

Friday 20th July - at 6.15pm

Friday 7th September - at 6.15pm

Further assessment dates will be added later. Please check back later.

Please note that parents/guardians are not allowed in the gym during the assessment process.

There is a fee of 2 per child for the assessment. Please bring the correct change.

It is difficult to predict how long the wait will be until we have a space available as it depends on many variables. Generally, the maximum waiting time is usually a year from attending an assessment.

Once a place has become available we will contact you offering you a place in the appropriate grouping for your son/daughter.

Should you have any questions regarding this process please get in touch via email, otherwise we look forward to welcoming you to one of the sessions outlined above.

Classes and Groupings

All our classes focus on developing a basic level of fitness as well as teaching body awareness through gymnastic activities. All classes follow a similar format and incorporate simple acrobatic gymnastics as well as teaching individual gymnastic skills.

We have 4 levels of classes which will cater for all ages and abilities.

'Young beginners' classes which is especially for 4-6 yr old beginners, this is a shorter 45 minute session.

'Beginners' is for children who are starting gymnastics at a slightly older age.

'Novice' sessions are 60 minutes and are suitable for for those with some experience who are not yet ready to move to intermediate level work.

'Intermediate' for those who have achieved at least badge 2.

'Advanced' for those who have achieved badge 1 and are working towards bronze, silver and gold badges. Gymnasts are invited to attend this class.

Once we have seen your child for an assessment session your name will be added to the waiting list of the class which we feel will be most suitable.

Fees and Membership

Fees are charged per hour and are payable in full for a term. 1 hour classes from September 2017 will be 8 and the 45 minute session will be 7 per class. There is also an annual club membership fee of 25 which includes membership and insurance with British Gymnastics. This is payable in September or on first joining the club. All members now need to enrol directly with BG to ensure they are insured for the year.

Our recreational gymnastic terms begin in September, January and April and generally coincide with the school breaks.

We usually begin enrollment for new members 2-4 weeks before the start of the new term.  For existing members, places need to be reserved 4 weeks ahead of the new term.  It is not possible to be added to our waiting list without coming to an assessment. Once you are on our waiting list we will contact you when spaces become available.

Attending Your First Session

When you are invited to join one of our classes children should wear the club uniform, which for girls is a blue club leotard and for boys a black leotard and blue shorts. These are available directly from us and can be bought at the beginning of your first class or once you have been offered a place. All children work in bare feet. All jewelry should be removed, including earings and bracelets of any kind. Girls may wear leggins or shorts over the top of their leotard if they wish. Please arrive changed for your session as we do not have changing facilities available. There is a toilet available if you do need to change as a one-off, but we request that where possible children arrive ready for their session. Children should bring a drink of water with them to the session. All children should be dropped off and picked up directly by yourselves. They are not permitted to leave the gym without seeing a parent/friend who they know is taking them home. Please come to the door to collect them personally. If for any reason the named parent/guardian is not going to be collecting you must inform the coach at the start of the session. Please also ensure that your child knows who they are going home with. Unfortunately we do not have space in the hall for you to stay and watch during the sessions, you can however watch through the window in the door. If you do have other children with you please keep them under control in the school buildings.

We reserve the right to cancel any session during the scheduled term dates. We will always try and reschedule any lost sessions.
